Carnauba Wax

Carnauba Wax

Carnauba wax is a natural plant-derived wax obtained from the leaves of the Carnauba palm tree (Copernicia prunifera), which grows mainly in northeastern Brazil. Often referred to as the "queen of waxes" because of its exceptionally high melting point, hardness, and brilliant gloss, Carnauba wax is one of the hardest natural waxes known. Chemically, Carnauba wax is composed of about 85% saturated and unsaturated fatty esters, along with minor amounts of free fatty acids and fatty alcohols. The high content of saturated esters imparts a hard and brittle texture, while the unsaturated esters provide polishing and film-forming properties. This unique balance of hardness, durability, and water resistance underlies its broad range of industrial and technical applications. In the pharmaceutical field, Carnauba wax is widely valued as a multifunctional excipient. It is particularly useful in controlled-release and sustained-release dosage forms, where its high melting point and structural integrity contribute to the formation of stable, solid matrices. Additionally, its excellent film-forming and moisture-barrier properties make it suitable for tablet coating, capsule polishing, and protective formulations, helping to improve product stability, appearance, and patient acceptability.

Product Advantages

The Carnauba wax we offer has undergone a two-stage purification process, resulting in minimal impurities and significantly lower peroxide values and heavy metal content compared to other waxes on the market. This superior purification ensures that the wax is safe for use in pharmaceutical applications, providing consistent quality with every batch. Key advantages of our Carnauba wax include:

  • Low Peroxide Value: The low peroxide value of our Carnauba wax is crucial for ensuring the stability of the final product. Peroxides can cause degradation in sensitive formulations, but our wax minimizes the risk of such reactions, preserving the integrity of the drug product.
  • Low Gel Content: This characteristic is essential for ensuring smooth and efficient processing. A low gel content ensures that the wax is easily incorporated into formulations without interfering with the drug's dissolution rate or bioavailability.
  • Particle Size Control: We offer Carnauba wax in a range of particle sizes, including options with a particle size as small as 15 microns. This allows us to tailor the product to the specific needs of our clients, whether for fine coating applications or more robust, bulkier formulations.
  • Purity and Consistency: Thanks to our rigorous quality control processes, our Carnauba wax boasts minimal impurities. This is critical for ensuring the final product is safe, effective, and consistent across production batches.
  • Customizable Particle Size: we offer the flexibility to customize the particle size range for our powdered carnauba wax grades. This customization allows our clients to achieve optimal performance in their specific applications.

Applications

Our high-purity carnauba wax is compatibility with multiple formulation types a wide range of applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

Tablet Coating and Polishing

Carnauba wax is widely used for coating and polishing tablets. Its smooth texture, combined with its low gel content, allows for an even and glossy finish, improving both the aesthetic and functional properties of tablets. Additionally, it can provide a protective coating to ensure that the active ingredients are preserved during storage and handling.

Controlled-Release Formulations

Due to its high melting point and stable nature, Carnauba wax is often used in the formulation of controlled-release drugs. The wax forms a matrix that can control the release of active pharmaceutical ingredients over an extended period, allowing for sustained therapeutic effects and improved patient compliance.

Pellet and Granule Encapsulation

Carnauba wax plays a significant role in the encapsulation of pellets and granules, ensuring that active ingredients are released at the desired rate. This application is particularly useful in formulations aimed at targeting specific regions of the gastrointestinal tract.

Other Applications

Beyond these primary uses, our carnauba wax can also be used in capsules, ointments, and topical creams. Its inert nature and excellent barrier properties make it suitable for a variety of formulations where a solid, stable, and non-reactive excipient is needed.

Carnauba wax is an indispensable excipient in the pharmaceutical industry, offering exceptional performance, safety, and versatility. Our carefully refined and purified Carnauba wax products are designed to meet the highest standards, providing reliable and effective solutions for tablet coating, controlled-release formulations, and more.
